<p>Comentario elogioso al libro de Jules Hensen sobre las largas gestiones diplomáticas llevadas a cabo durante doce años entre Francia y Rusia. No se especifica el título.</p>
<p>Lamentos de Mansilla en torno a la ley de separación de Iglesia y Estado: en su opinión, un Estado laico pierde la guía moral y entra en crisis. Se menciona al pasar la concepción del Estado según Luzzatti.</p>
<p>Breve anécdota de un amigo de Mansilla que persigue a una mujer en la calle.</p>
<p>Comentario sobre una pensión recientemente otorgada por el Estado argentino a su amigo Carlos Guido Spano. A propósito de dicho comentario, Mansilla aprovecha para criticar al socialismo (tema recurrente en estas páginas breves), expresar su nacionalismo y mandar saludos a su amigo, a quien espera visitar pronto en Argentina.</p>
<p>El presupuesto que cada potencia europea destina en armamento es cada vez mayor. El señor de Martins fue enviado desde Rusia para tratar de “negociar” que dentro del programa de la próxima convención de La Haya se incluya el tema del desarme internacional. Mansilla ha advertido, desde el inicio de estas páginas breves, en torno al clima tenso de preguerra que se vive en Europa.</p>
<p>Crítica al libro de Emile Flourens, <em>La Francia conquistada</em>. Mansilla no coincide con la que comenta como hipótesis principal de Flourens: el sometimiento de Francia en manos de Inglaterra. Considera que el libro peca de “exageración excesiva y de los juicios temerarios”.</p>
<p>Noticia sobre el ingreso a la Academia Francesa del Conde de Segur. Como es costumbre, el académico ingresante da un discurso laudatorio sobre aquel a quien está reemplazando: en este caso, Monsieur Rousse.</p>
<p>Comentario elogioso sobre la sexta conferencia de Jules Lemaitre en torno de Rousseau: en este caso, sobre “Julie o La Nouvelle Heloise”. <p>Reflexión sobre la correspondencia: cartas que llegan y no son contestadas, cartas que nunca llegan, otras que deben hacer un largo itinerario para llegar a su destinatario.</p>

<p>Comentario sobre la huelga de Fougeres: Mansilla ve con malos ojos las huelgas. Aquí, se cuida de inculpar por igual a patrones y obreros, en nombre de defender al “consumidor”.</p>
<p>Reseña del discurso de asunción de Maurice Barrès a su asiento en la Academia Francesa, en reemplazo del poeta cubano-francés José María Heredia. Se menciona que Barrès prologó los <em>Estudios morales</em> de Mansilla.</p>

<p>Mansilla presenta el último trabajo, <em>Libros y cuestiones del día</em>, de Victor Giraud, a quien considera uno de los “escritores franceses más concienzudos”. Se trata de una compilación de artículos sobre literatura que Giraud ha ido publicando a lo largo de los años en la “Revue des Deux Mondes”. Este autor tiene, según Mansilla, dos méritos importantes: no ha perdido profundidad a pesar de haberse dedicado a temas literarios amplios y tiene muy presente la idea romántica de que “toda literatura tiene un alma suya propia (la del autor)”.</p>
<p>Mansilla refiere haber leído “con cierto orgullo argentino” un estudio de las constituciones sudamericanas comparadas publicado en “La Revista Contemporánea” de Madrid.</p>
<p>Continúa con el resumen comentado de las conferencias que dicta Jules Lemaitre sobre Rousseau. En este caso, tras haber escuchado la correspondiente a <em>El contrato social</em>, elogia la labor crítica de Lemaitre y apunta una serie de contradicciones que encuentra en la obra rousseaniana.</p>
<p>Breve comentario sobre la disminución de la natalidad en Francia.</p>
<p>Breve reflexión sobre los asientos vacantes de la Academia Francesa de Literatura.</p>
<p>Dura crítica al trabajo de Max Nordau, <em>Arte y artistas</em>. Tanto hacia el final de esta crítica como hacia el final del siguiente libro que comenta, el de su amigo Joaquín Nabuco, Mansilla deja ver su alta religiosidad.</p>
<p>Comentario muy despreciativo (“una exhibición que huele a estiércol”) sobre la obra de teatro en cartel en el teatro Odeón de París: “La tante de l'abbé Mouret”, de Zola. No casualmente, se trata de una obra fuertemente anticlerical.</p>
<p>Se comenta que ha ocurrido la renovación de los miembros del “London County Conceil”, y que han triunfado, para alegría del autor de las Páginas breves, los conservadores.</p>
